Meows alone cannot determine what a cat is trying to say to you. There are various other ways for a cat to communicate to their surrounding.

Cat meows only to humans
1. The tail speaks
When cats held their tail up high, it means that it is confident and if it curls it around other cats or maybe your leg, it shows a friendly greeting or slight affection. The moving tail symbolizes excitement like, when it is in predator mode while a whipping movement show that it is upset or disturbed (do not startle them at this point, you may be bitten or clawed!). A happy cat will move or wiggle its tail just like a dog will do.

2. The sound they make.
Cats can make many sounds which symbolize different signals that the cats are trying to convey. Cats purr usually shows that they are satisfied or happy but cat can even purr when they are sick in order to console themselves like a baby sucking his thumb. A meow is a sound they usually make to communicate with humans. Cats meow to ask for food, to show confusion, to demand attention or to show complaints. Cats will make hauling, spitting or hissing sounds when they felt threatened or in danger.

3. The body language.
When a cat rolls on its back and shows you its tummy, it shows that it is happy and it trusts you. Cats says “I love you” to you by blinking its eye slowly when they are looking at you. This is one of the most distinct ways for a cat to show you their affection. When the back of a cat is arched with its fur standing, it shows that it is frightened of in defence mode. On the other hand, when the fur is flattened with the back arched, it is a welcoming sign for you to pet it.
