So I decided to make this post in ascending order, from the smallest to the one that topped the chart. This is only the final five of the top 10 biggest cat in the world. Stay tuned to my next entry for more!


10. Caracal

Scientific name: Caracal caracal

How big are we: 19kg, 42 pounds or 2.6 bowling balls

This breed can be found in Africa and Southwest Asia, where the caracal prefers grasslands (savannas and tropical grasslands), and deserts. Commonly known as the Persian Lynx or African Lynx even though this breed is not even a lynx at all. The caracals name is believed to originates from the Turkish word Karakulak, which means black ears. This breed is renowned for its agility and ability to catch flying preys. The caracal’s coat is normally dark red, grey, or golden sand in colour and just as the name suggests, the caracal’s ears are black, with tufts. This big cat normally hunts down rodents, birds (including ostriches), antelopes, gazelles, and rabbits as their prey. They live in solitary and can live up to 12 years with a proper diet.

9. Clouded Leopard

Scientific name: Neofelis nebulosa

How big are we: 23kg, 51 pounds or 3.2 bowling balls.

The Clouded Leopard is a medium sized feline that is found living in the the dense tropical jungles of south-east Asia. This feline is said to be one of the shyest breed thus they are most rarely seen by the humans. Bearing one of the very most beautiful big cats, their most distinct characteristics can be mostly seen with their yellow to grey coloured coat that is patterned with large, cloud-like markings that are lined with black and are darker in the centre. Their diet varies, depends on where they live. Clouded Leopards who are founded in Thailand favour rodents, Ground Squirrels and Porcupines and some may also have interest in hunting primates including Pig-Tailed Macaques, Gibbons and Proboscis Monkeys. This feline prefers to hunt deep in the night as well as early morning and dusk and they live in solitary most of their lifetime.

8. Eurasian Lynx

Scientific name: Lynx lynx

How big are we: 36kg, 79 pounds or 4.9 bowling balls.

The Eurasian lynx is the largest of the 4 lynx species. Their bodies are short, with long legs and large feet. The ears have a characteristic black tuft at the tip while the paws have sharp retractile claws. These feline usually have fur with the colour that can be grey to red and more or less spotted. This big cat originally found from the UK to China and prefers to live in dense forests where they can easily stalk their prey. The Eurasian lynx eats a wide range of prey but tends to focus on roe deer as well as red deer, and various other small mammals. This big cat are said to be most active at dawn and dusk and usually sleeps at night and day. They are good climbers and they often use trees to stalk their prey. Just like most big cats, this feline prefers to live in solitary except in mating seasons.

7. Cheetah

Scientific name: Acinonyx jubatus

How big are we: 54 kg, 119 pounds or 7.4 bowling balls.

Cheetah has forever been renowned for its speed and up until now, it remains as the fastest mammals alive where they can run with speed up to 112kph (70mph). This feline originates from throughout Africa and Asia and even in parts of Europe. The Cheetah has a long and slender body and it is covered in yellowish fur, dotted with small black spots. What makes them different is their black tear mark that runs from their inner eyes, along their nose and down to the outside of their mouths. Cheetahs usually does not eat straight away after a hunt since it needs to cool down after the immense chasing of their prey which are mostly Gazelle and a number of large Antelope species such as Wildebeest, along with Zebras and smaller mammals like Hares. Cheetahs, however, cannot roar but they are able to make high pitch yelps that can be heard from miles away. This feline prefers to live alone but sometimes, they are also spotted to live in pairs.

6. Leopard

Scientific name: Panthera pardus

How big are we: 65kg, 143 pounds or 8.9 bowling balls

Just like the jaguar, this big cat that is famous for its beautiful black markings called rosettes but these patterns differ from one another, depending on where the leopard originates from. This big cat roams about areas in Siberia, through parts of Asia and regions in Africa below the Sahara Desert. They were once found in places like Kuwait, Singapore, Hong Kong, Libya and Tunisia. Thankfully, they are not considered extinct in those areas. Leopards prey on almost all type of meat they can found lurking around the area. Leopards are regarded as an excellent hunter as it usually spends a great deal of its time on trees. Their body are long an supported by short legs and a very long tail for balance as it is a natural climber. This big cat live its life in solitary and hunts mostly at night.
